Richard Lombard was an Associate Professor and Head of the Materials Library at VCUarts Qatar up until 2016. Now, he is a Brooklyn-based materials specialist, writer, and curator working at the intersection of commercial, academic, and creative production.
He has worked with museums (the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Qatar Auto Museum) and auction houses (Sotheby’s); and has taught in the US (Pratt Institute, College for Creative Studies), Europe (Politecnico di Milano), and here in the Middle East. His current research focuses on scale – of extraction, of production, of utilization.
Richard has been convening conferences since 2006. That year, he created TERRA MATTER for Material ConneXion in New York, an early spotlight on sustainability in Design. At VCUarts Qatar he was part of the team that put together Tasmeem Doha 2015: 3ajeeb!
