Sunday, 3 March – Morning Panel Talks / Afternoon Workshops
Monday, 4 March – Morning Workshops / Afternoon Panel Talks / Evening Student Event
Tasmeem Doha is an international, biennial art and design conference hosted and organized by VCUarts Qatar since 2004. Each edition of Tasmeem Doha highlights a unique and contemporary theme within art and design, exploring novel concepts, methods, and applications, and engaging in critical discussions. Much of the event is open to the public, with attendees and participants consisting of international designers, artists, academics, students, industry professionals, and the local community.
The 2024 edition, “Under Construction”, investigates the criticality of change, and the role that Art and Design can play in that change. To be ‘under construction’ is to be active, to be activated, and to be (in the best of cases) improved. “Under Construction” is also a metaphor for creative research, the academic pursuit of understanding and recording that change, and also seeking ways to guide it through the creation of novel solutions.
These processes of construction, deconstruction, and reconstruction can be addressed at all levels – from the individual to the global community – and the event will endeavor to present a wide range of perspectives. The program features practitioners in the realms that VCUarts Qatar is currently engaging with – the core elements of Art and Design – but also features technology gurus, critical theorists, robot makers, and many more.
“Under Construction” takes place during the 25th Anniversary year of Virginia Commonwealth University’s campus in Doha, Qatar, and is itself the 13th edition of the event, so the temporality of change, the persistence of memory, and their impact on our future will also feature in the program. Contributors to the program include returning speakers and workshop leaders, Richmond-based VCU faculty, VCUarts Qatar alumni, as well as participants new to the event and the community.
