  • March 2, 2024, 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM
  • Location: Atrium, VCUarts Qatar
  • Upon Registration Only

Moderated by Dr. Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFarès

Panelists: Wael Morcos, Muiz

The panel will introduce the politics of design and the need to create an autonomous visual language rooted in one’s own cultural heritage and yet responding to contemporary social needs. It will address Arabic typography as a means of engagement with cultural identity and cultural resistance, specially in diasporic practices. It will unpack the structures of the Arabic script, its relation to classical calligraphy, and the diversity of inspiration that influences contemporary design. The guest speakers will introduce their work and discuss the nuances of innovation and materiality in Arabic typography and lettering today in the region and internationally.

The panel will start with Dr. Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFarès introducing the exhibition and the themes that frame the selection of the works on display in VCUarts Qatar’s The Gallery. It will then be followed by brief presentations by two of the designers participating in the exhibition, Wael Morcos and Muiz, and a discussion.
