Souvenirs are objects or artifacts that often represent a place or experience for remembrance or recollection. The Materials and Methods Studio in the MFA program offers a module that investigates souvenirs as an opportunity to represent but also to re-present culture through various lenses – both subjective and objective, and abstractly or literally. Students explore materiality and fabrication through mold-making and casting and are challenged with infusing designed objects with meaningful narratives. Students consider the balance between the personal and universal, what to preserve and hold on to, and what to transform. The process considers how these projects can extend beyond the class and into the market. Considerations include market appeal, relatability, fabrication, scalability, retail strategies, and sales.
This workshop will offer participants a shortened overview of the souvenir project from the perspectives of an educator, Yasmeen Suleiman, a student, Saga Ahmed, and a market expert and alumna, Asma Derouiche. Participants will explore the translation of ideas into products through guided discussions and hands-on experience in mold-making and casting.
This workshop is a repetition of the workshop from March 3, 2023, 1:30 PM – 5:30 PM.
