Reviving Third Places – Plenary Session

4 March 2024

9:30 am

One-day in-person workshop co-led by Isabella Rossen, Robert Čanak, Sebastien Turbot, Ethan Kent, Nihal Mohamed, and Nur Alah Abdelzayed Valdeolmillos

  • March 4, 2024, 9:30 PM – 1:30 PM
  • Location: Room 255, VCUarts Qatar
  • Upon Registration Only

Building on the previous day’s workshops and site visits of Souq Haraj and the Education City cultural heritage site, the focus of the workshop will be to discuss, in a plenary session, gathered information and the evaluation of the current sites, from that, to propose design interventions that can improve these spaces for current and future users.

The session will be introduced by presentations of case studies from international, regional and local placemakers.

The primary goal of this Placemaking exercise is to – through small design interventions – contribute to the repurposing of these sites, focusing on the critical role that “third places” can play in strengthening the sense of community.

Participants will learn how to map and evaluate a place based on sociability, accessibility, uses, and levels of comfort. This will help the participants to articulate their own observations about how a place is operating on a day-to-day basis – and consequently, how we can enhance the place to better address the needs of its users.

While such workshop outcomes are highly conceptual, they can inform the decision-making processes and steer enhancement of spaces in new directions.

The workshop is the continuation of Reviving Third Places, ‘Living Rooms’ of Society workshop, and Reviving Third Places – a case study of an Educational City Cultural heritage site workshop from March 3, 2024, 1:30 PM – 5:30 PM. Please register for either of the two Sunday workshops to participate in this session.
