One-day in-person workshop co-led by Sara Bazzano and Reema Abu Hassan
- March 3, 2024, 1:30 PM – 5:30 PM
- Location: Clay Encounters, Mina Port District
- Upon Registration Only
This is an off-site workshop. Transportation to the workshop location from VCUarts Qatar and back will be provided and is part of the experience.
This workshop – a collaboration between the Qatari-based studio Clay Encounters and the Italian-based studio Munlab – will explore the many facets of what many consider a simple material: clay. The most ancient of design materials, clay allowed humans to truly leave their handprint on the future. From simple vessels to bricks to magnificent structures, clay has been inspiring creativity for millennia.
In the workshop, the leaders will discuss the variety of clays, slips, and glazes and ways of manipulating them. Participants will be guided through two different hand-building exercises, and will have the opportunity to explore the material and the techniques and, ultimately, to make two unglazed pieces: a cup and a large plant pot. If desired, these pieces will be fired and returned to VCUarts Qatar for pickup.
The workshop is repeated on March 4, 2023, 9:30 AM – 1:30 PM.
